FerraVolt team co-author report on rotary kilns in India
In collaboration with Delhi-based research institute, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), members of the FerraVolt team co-authored a brief report on the potential role of hydrogen rotary kilns in decarbonising the Indian iron and steel sector. In this report, the authors set out the main challenges faced by the Indian iron and steel sector in decarbonising their production, the leading low emission ironmaking options that are currently in development around the world, and the potential attributes of the hydrogen rotary kiln that would make it suitable for this market. Drawing on initial outcomes from international R&D projects and expert insights, the report highlights key benefits of the hydrogen rotary kiln, including low capital investment, feedstock flexibility, lower reaction temperatures, and increased metallization rates. The paper concludes with recommendations to support the commercialization of this technology, accelerating the decarbonization of India’s steel sector.
