Next-generation Hydrogen-based Ironmaking

We're building an electrically-heated rotary kiln, engineered for fossil-free iron production in harmony with future clean power systems

Purpose-designed Green Ironmaking

The FerraVolt green ironmaking technology is purpose-designed to meet the evolving requirements of a decarbonized steel industry. Rather than modifying legacy ironmaking routes, it is engineered from first principles to operate within electrified, hydrogen-based, and increasingly variable energy systems.

Zero emissions

Replacing fossil fuels with renewable hydrogen and electricity

Modular

Can be deployed at small-scale, from 100 ktpa

Flexible

Can ramp between 20-100% capacity, better integrating with RE

Cost competitive

Rotary kilns show relatively low operational costs and a modest investment costs

Re-engineering the rotary kiln

FerraVolt re-engineers the rotary kiln to operate with hydrogen as the reductant and electricity as the primary heat source, eliminating fossil combustion from the reduction process. The system provides a controlled, high-temperature environment for producing Direct Reduced Iron (DRI).

Iron ore is continuously fed into a rotating, inclined kiln, while hydrogen flows counter-currently to reduce iron oxides to metallic iron. The process combines electrified heat supply, hydrogen-based reduction, and a modular reactor design into a fossil-free ironmaking route aligned with modern energy systems.

Deep Dive and Explore Further

FerraVolt AB and Höganäs AB enter co-development partnership for fossil-free ironmaking.

We are seeking partners and projects that could help us build the next generation ironmaking.

Our core team pioneered the green iron- and steelmaking already in 2016 taking part in the HYBRIT initiative.
